CREATING A NON-DUAL ARCHITECTURE

Professor: Valerie Greer

The toolbox of natural phenomena which architects use have a beautiful connection to the Buddhist concept of Non-Dualism. Light and Dark, Solid and Void, Warm and Cold, can all be labeled Non-Dual. In other words, these phenomena are mutually arising, and you cannot have one without the other. This 30 unit housing project in Niseko, Japan embeds Non-Duality at every level in order to create an authentic Japanese experience to foreigners interested in learning about the culture, as well as locals who can appreciate such an experience.

The following images are from a two-week warmup project in which we were tasked with designing just two units in Niseko.
